Data Privacy Day is today and to celebrate, we have tips for you on how to protect your data. Millions of people are unaware of and uninformed about how their personal information is being used or shared digitally.

These tips will help you form a solid foundation and protect your data:

Check the privacy policy by finding the privacy link at the bottom of a company’s website and make sure they aren’t sharing your data for advertising or marketing purposes and they aren’t using data for things you’re not alright with.

Ask why when someone asks for your phone number or the last four digits of your Social Security number. If they don’t have an answer, don’t give it to them.

Update your devices frequently and if you don’t have auto-updates enabled, check for updates frequently. This is probably the best way to protect your information from attacks.

Avoid public Wi-Fi networks which usually do not encrypt traffic so anyone on the network can spy on your usage. If you have to use public Wi-Fi, do not share any important data.

Opt out of having your data used and shared. Find the links in the privacy policy/privacy settings. Free is not free. When you sign up for “free” apps, services and games your data is being used. Ask to be put on do not call/mail lists when possible.

Use tracker blocker browser extensions, which will block online tools that track your behavior on websites.

Fake it and set up email accounts you only use for online shopping, providing fake information.

Create strong passwords and change them frequently. Use capital letters, numbers and symbols. Don’t use personal information, such as, children’s names and personal dates. Having a complex password can make a huge difference when it comes to data security. Also, make sure you have passwords on all your devices.
